Chargebacks are by far the number one reason why merchants, especially those accepting payments in a card-not-present environment – get in trouble with their processors. Themselves closely monitored by Visa and MasterCard and facing steep fines if one of their merchant’s monthly chargeback rate exceeds one percent of the total number of sales transactions, processing banks tend to be pretty quick on the draw. Your merchant account will be suspended for any sudden spike in chargebacks, and terminated if you can’t bring them under control, long before the one-percent threshold is reached.
